Why Your Diet Might Be the Root Cause of Your Health Problems

Ultra-processed foods dominate the modern American diet — and are driving chronic disease.

I’ve been practicing medicine for 38 years. I’ve worked emergency departments across this country, run my own practice, and now I’ve opened Integrative Health Medical Group here in Lewisburg. In all that time, one pattern has become unmistakable: the people walking through my office door are sick because of what they’re putting in their bodies.

Not always. Not entirely. But more often than not, diet is the foundational issue.

A patient comes in with fatigue. Another with brain fog. Another with joint pain, digestive issues, or skin problems that won’t resolve. We run labs. We check hormones. We look for infections. Sometimes we find specific pathology that needs treatment. But just as often, the real problem is simpler — and harder to fix at the same time: their body is starving for real nutrition while drowning in processed food.

“Your body is smarter than you think. Feed it right and it will heal itself.”

The Problem We’ve Created

Modern food culture has become a health crisis. We’ve optimized for convenience, shelf life, and profit — not for human health. The standard American diet is engineered to be hyper-palatable, calorie-dense, and nutrient-poor. It’s full of seed oils, refined carbohydrates, added sugars, and chemicals your great-grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food.

Your body knows the difference. It’s been telling you for years. Fatigue, brain fog, weight gain, chronic inflammation, unstable blood sugar, digestive dysfunction — these aren’t random. They’re your body’s way of saying it’s not getting what it needs.

Fast food and restaurant food aren’t evil. But they’re not medicine either. They’re convenient, cheap, and designed to be addictive. Your body doesn’t run on convenience. It runs on nutrients — real micronutrients, real macronutrients, real food.

What Real Food Actually Means

Real food grows from the earth — vegetables, fruits, herbs, and whole ingredients your body recognizes.

When I say “eat real food,” I don’t mean some extreme diet or expensive superfood trend. I mean going back to basics. Real food is what grows from the ground or comes from an animal. It has one ingredient or a handful of ingredients you recognize. Vegetables. Fruits. Whole grains. Legumes. Eggs. Meat. Fish. Nuts. Seeds. Herbs. Spices.

Real food is what your body evolved eating over thousands of years. Not what the food industry invented in the last 50.

I grow much of my own food. I raise chickens. I make my own herbal preparations. I do this because I’ve seen — clinically and personally — what happens when you eat from the earth instead of from a package. Energy returns. Brain fog clears. Inflammation drops. Digestion improves. Weight stabilizes. Lab markers normalize.

This isn’t magic. It’s just biology working the way it’s supposed to when you give it what it actually needs.

The Three Things Your Body Is Begging For

1. Nutrient Density. Your body needs vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and antioxidants. These come from real, whole foods — especially plants. A plate of fast food has calories. A plate of vegetables, whole grains, and quality protein has nutrition. There’s a massive difference.

2. Real Macronutrients. Protein, fat, and carbohydrates matter. But so does where they come from. Whole food sources — grass-fed beef, wild-caught fish, pastured eggs, legumes, whole grains — are fundamentally different from processed versions. Your digestion is different. Your hormone response is different. Your energy is different.

3. Absence of Toxins. Processed food is full of things your body has to work hard to eliminate: refined seed oils, added sugars, preservatives, artificial additives, pesticide residues. Every one of these creates inflammation and oxidative stress. Remove them and your immune system, your liver, and your gut get a chance to actually heal.

Where to Start Monday Morning

A balanced plate built from whole, real foods — the foundation of lasting health.

You don’t need to overhaul everything at once. Start here:

YOUR ACTION PLAN

  • Breakfast: Eggs and vegetables instead of cereal. Or oatmeal with nuts, seeds, and fruit. Real food. Protein and fiber. Your blood sugar stays stable.
  • Lunch: Salad with quality protein — chicken, fish, beans. Build it yourself. You know every ingredient.
  • Dinner: Vegetable, whole grain or legume, quality protein. The basic plate. Cook it at home when you can.
  • Snacks: Nuts, seeds, fruit, cheese. Not packaged snack foods. Real things that came from somewhere.
  • Water: Drink it. A lot of it. Not sugary drinks or energy drinks. Water.

The Hard Part

This requires time and intention. Cooking takes longer than drive-through. Growing food or shopping farmers markets takes planning. It costs money upfront — though less than medical bills down the road.

But here’s what I know: your body will thank you. Your energy will return. Your labs will improve. Your symptoms will resolve. Not because of a diet fad or a supplement, but because you’re finally giving your body what it actually needs.

You feel good when you eat good. It’s that simple.

“If you’re struggling with chronic fatigue, digestive issues, brain fog, or metabolic dysfunction — diet is where we start at Integrative Health Medical Group. Not as a Band-Aid, but as the foundation.”

Your body is smarter than you think. Feed it right and it will heal itself.
